But don’t just gaze at the glittering horizon from the comfort of your private patio. Head out to sea with gear (kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling gear) from the on-site Recreation Hut, dive into one of the resort’s pools, or simply soak up the sun over brunch at The Great House – don’t forget to check out the rum bar.

Belle Mont Farm is the centrepiece of Kittitian Hill, a 161-hectare former sugar plantation in northwest St Kitts, home to a complex of properties comprising clusters of cottages, villas and residences set next to the Ian Woosnam-designed Irie Fields golf course. The airport transfer takes 45 minutes, and the island’s best beaches are 18 miles (29 km) away. Golf carts are used to transport guests and their luggage, and while it’s helpful to have your own car, there is a shuttle service to Basseterre, South Frigate Bay Beach and Sprat Net Restaurant (for an extra fee).

After a long, uphill drive inland, guests arrive at the towering Great House with its replica sugar mill, infinity pool, expansive terraces and ‘The Lookout’ reception area. Designed by Bill Bensley, renowned for his luxury properties in Asia, it’s elegant, airy and stylish, with blue as the predominant colour. Cottages feature traditional wooden shingles, the Mill Bar is decorated with vintage wireless sets, the lounge and dining room feature oversized travellers’ chests and an unexpected metal floor.

Belle Mont Farm has a large fitness centre, spa facilities, two tennis courts and a nine-hole golf course where you can enjoy a meal. This means sustainability is a big focus, with players able to pick fruit as they stroll through the lawns.

There are 33 cottages and seven villas, each with a full kitchen and two to four bedrooms. Almost all the cottages have their own plunge pool. The interiors are colonial in style, with dark wood décor, louvered doors, roll-top baths and vibrant artwork by local artist Kate Spencer. Instead of a TV, there’s a retractable projection screen with streaming programming, plus a complimentary minibar and premium lemongrass-scented toiletries. Note that the bath, shower, sinks and toilet are outside, with screens and foliage providing privacy. It can get chilly at this altitude in the winter months, so pack warm clothes and insect repellent, and stow away valuables and food to avoid monkey attention.

Breakfast can be served in your room, a tray of delicacies that might include freshly squeezed watermelon juice, coconut cinnamon bread, and yogurt with Nevisian honey. It can also be ordered à la carte at The Kitchen. Lunch is served at the Pool Bar & Grill, or a complimentary shuttle takes guests to Arthur’s, the hotel’s beach restaurant on Dieppe Bay that specializes in sea-to-fork cuisine. Dinner at The Kitchen is a pleasant affair, with live music some nights and a menu that combines international and Caribbean dishes.

Located north of Pinney’s Beach overlooking St. Kitts, the property occupies 10 acres of land and the spacious villas are close together, yet the resort doesn’t feel overcrowded thanks to the open floor plan and enveloping, colourful tropical gardens. The beach isn’t private, but it often feels that way – you can usually swim in the warm sea in the morning in complete peace, and settle in for the sunset at the end of the day, then the distant lights of St. Kitts sparkling at night.

Paradise Beach is set behind sturdy gates and whitewashed walls, giving the feel of a secret, upmarket enclave. The villas have steep thatched roofs and an Asian feel – if you’re looking for bright Caribbean colours and local artwork, this isn’t the place to come. The inland villas feature an inviting pebble-sided pool and lush tropical gardens that lead to a manicured beach and restaurant.

The beach has snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding equipment, as well as hammocks, loungers and palapas. Yoga mats and exercise machines are provided in the villas.

The thatched villas offer a choice of two, three or four bedrooms. Seven of these are arranged in two rows running from the beach. Another five are located along the sand and have two bedrooms. Described as Beach Houses and raised on sturdy stilts, they are of a uniquely luxurious design for Nevis and include a copper swimming pool, windows with ingenious roller mosquito nets and external wooden staircases that can be raised like a drawbridge at the touch of a button – a fun touch that provides privacy and security.

The interiors throughout the house are of a high standard, styled by British designer and TV presenter Naomi Cleaver. A monumental kitchen and breakfast bar take pride of place in the living room, the TV is hidden in a cupboard, there is a Bose sound system and a safe. The bedrooms have luxurious four-poster beds, and the bathrooms have robes and Hèrmes toiletries.

There is a small beach bar and a thatched-roof restaurant, decorated with 1,700 green beer bottles, which is open only to residents. Cocktails and rum punches are spot on, and the atmosphere depends on who is around.

Breakfast is à la carte. If you like to cook yourself, all villas have a well-equipped kitchen and dining facilities, and groceries can be ordered in advance. You can also arrange for a chef to visit and for food to be delivered from restaurants around the island. The Paradise Drive-Thru restaurant opposite the resort entrance serves delicious and affordable local cuisine.

Located on Nevis’s famous Pinney’s Beach, the Four Seasons offers 189 newly renovated guest rooms and suites in two-story plantation-style cottages. As part of the multi-million dollar renovation, the resort has also introduced three brand new dining concepts: On the Dune, focused on contemporary American and Caribbean cuisine, the Mediterranean-inspired EsQuilina, and a cigar and cocktail bar topped by a monkey RUM BAR.

The sprawling grounds also include 50 villas, picture-perfect palm groves, multiple free-form infinity pools, four restaurants and four bars, a golf course that’s a favorite Caribbean getaway (look out for the island monkeys swinging from the treetops), and a relaxing spa with lava rock waterfalls and terraced gardens with plunge pools.

Three infinity pools dot the grounds. A serene adults-only option overlooking the sea beckons. Spend your days alternating between swimming in warm waters and lounging on the teak deck, sipping guava-infused water.

Nevis is family-friendly, with an all-ages pool (the adult pool is on the other side of the resort), a fun Kids For All Seasons program, a teen room with video games, and a daily schedule packed with activities.

Managed by Peter Burwash International, the tennis facilities feature four red clay courts (two floodlit for night play), four hard courts (three floodlit for night play) and two Astro turf courts (both floodlit for night play). Professional instruction is available and all the necessary accessories can be found in the sports shop in the Sports Pavilion.

Golfers will line up to play the stunning 18-hole Robert Trent Jones II course, set amidst tropical forest and offering views of both the mountains and the sea.

For a particularly luxurious day in the sun, book one of the charming beach houses or poolside cabanas. Cushioned seating, Wi-Fi connectivity and stellar views promise a day of relaxation.
