The cuisine is tasty and hearty, yet distinctive. There is no pork. The diet is based on chicken, lamb, rice, vegetables, and legumes (hummus, falafel). The national dish is Mansaf (lamb cooked in a fermented dried yogurt sauce called jameed), traditionally eaten by hand. There are plenty of sweets and pastries. Alcohol is sold in specialized liquor stores or at hotels; it is not available in regular supermarkets.
