Expedia Group has unveiled its annual Unpack ’25 report, which highlights key travel trends for the year ahead. From checking out popular destinations to new vacation concepts, travelers will explore, be inspired and enjoy unique experiences this year.
Key trends:
- Non-tourist destinations: Travelers are increasingly interested not only in popular tourist destinations, but also in lesser-known corners. 63% of respondents plan to visit such places during their trips. Examples of attractive non-tourist destinations for 2025 include Kenmore in Alberta, Canada, Reims in France, Brescia in Italy, Cosumel in Mexico and Santa Barbara in California, USA.
- Gastronomic Travel: Inspired by TikTok, travelers actively seek out unique products during their trips, making room in their luggage for local delicacies and souvenirs. 39% of travelers visit grocery stores, and 44% purchase local goods that are not available in their home countries.
- Modern all-inclusive resorts: All-inclusive resorts are becoming increasingly popular, especially among Generation Z. 33% of young people have had a positive change of heart about such hotels, and 42% consider them ideal for a vacation. The main reasons for choosing them are minimal stress, ease of booking and the possibility of a luxury vacation.
- Renaissance of hotel restaurants: Travelers are increasingly turning their attention to hotel restaurants, eager to try dishes from Michelin-starred chefs. 40% of positive reviews of hotel restaurants have increased from last year, and nearly a third of travelers choose hotels based on the quality of the dining experience.
- JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) Travel: In 2025, there will be a growing interest in the concept of JOMO – the joy of missing out on hectic and active activities. 62% of travelers say these trips help reduce stress and increase the quality of time spent with loved ones.
- Movie Inspiration: Popular movies and TV series continue to influence destination choices, with Dubai and New York as top destinations to visit in 2025. Travelers are eager to delve into the world of their favorite stories and characters.
- Natural phenomena: Travelers are increasingly interested in natural phenomena such as the northern lights and solar eclipses. Vrbo highlights popular destinations to observe them, including Fundy Bay in Canada with the highest tides, International Dark Sky Park in Arches National Park, Utah, firefly season in Great Smoky Mountains, the penguin parade on Phillip Island in Australia, and bioluminescent plankton in Vero Beach, Florida.
