Meeting in Nairobi and transfer to the Chogoria area, at the Bandas guesthouse at the foothill of the Kenya mount
Dinner and overnight at the guesthouse
After breakfast and goods sorting by porters, you will start your ascent at a pleasant and easy pace. With a slight detour to the Lake Ellis, you could enjoy scenic views of the Mugi Hills and the Giants Billiard Table, as well as the Ithanguni Crater. The route will follow the river bank for about 3 km and you will discover stunning landscapes.
Lunch will be organized on the bank of the river. After lunch we will head to our camp at an altitude of about 3600 m, away from too touristy areas.
After an early rise, our path will be far off the beaten track. We will follow the ridge up for about 3 hours to eventually join the hiking trail on the standard Chogoria route at around 4100m. ).
Lunch will be cooked on the bank of a small river, after that we will continue our journey for another 1 hour to Minto’s Hut at an altitude of 4200 m, where we will stop for the night.
In the camp you could relax, as well as take a 10-minute walk to the “Temple”. It is a 150-meter vertical rock, which takes its name from the position that visitors often take when they look over the edge – they look as if they are praying.
Early rise and continuation of the way to Top Hut or Austrian Hut (Top Hut, Austrian Hut) – 4800 m. From this camp we will make the final short ascent to Point Lenana peak, 4985m. Point Lenana is a famous peak of Kenya Mount . From this peak we will descend along the northwest side to Shipton’s Camp, passing Harris Tarn Lake.
On this day we will climb the peak of Batian (Batian) by the standard route from the north side. We’ll hit the road in the dark, around 4 or 5 in the morning, so we’ll need headlamps for the first few pitches.
The route goes along a wide gorge, along which we will climb about 7 pitches, no more difficult than level 5.7. After another easy climb we will reach the Amphitheater, a small rocky pool halfway up the route, where we can rest for a while. We should be there around 07:30. Above us will be the goal of our route – the towering rock Firmin’s Tower, where we will head after the rest. There are about 3 difficult pitches waiting for us here, all of them quite short, but with a negative slope.
After them – an easier way, after which – a few more pitches and, finally, we will find ourselves on the western ridge. From this point we will continue along an easy but still open section of rock, heading towards Shipton’s Notch, located on the crest of the summit. One more pitch and then grade 4 and easy grade 5 rocks will take us to the Batian top.
The descent from the summit will follow the same route, to Shipton’s camp before dusk. Dinner and rest will be waiting at the camp.
After breakfast – a climb to 4600 m and back for lunch, rest and overnight at Shipton Camp.
After breakfast, we will descend to Shipton’s Camp via Simba Pass, after which we will begin a 5-hour descent through the Mackinder Valley to Old Moses Camp. The descent is gentle and gives enough time to enjoy the spectacular scenery, including the moorlands.
Dinner and overnight at Old Moses camp.
After an early breakfast, we will continue our 3-hour descent to the gates of Sirimon Park, where a car will be waiting for us to return to Nairobi around 16:00.
